Gilbert Considers Tighter Rules for E-Bikes and Electric Motorcycles

The town is weighing new limits on electric bikes and motorcycles as traffic and pedestrian safety concerns grow, though no specific rules have been proposed yet.

The Town of Gilbert is considering new restrictions on e-bikes and electric motorcycles, responding to growing worries about traffic and pedestrian safety on town streets and shared-use paths.

The concern centers on places where fast electric bikes share space with people on foot. Electric bikes have spread quickly through Gilbert's neighborhoods and trail network, and many towns are now revisiting where such vehicles may travel and how fast.

Arizona law already sorts e-bikes into classes based on speed and motor type. How those state rules apply locally is part of the question facing the town. Gilbert has not laid out a specific set of rules, so what any new limits would look like remains open.

Any proposal would need to go before the town council before becoming law. Residents who want details can follow upcoming council agendas and coverage from Gilbert Sun News, which reported on the issue.

The council's next regular session is set for 6:30 PM on Tuesday, June 9, and the agenda has been posted.

Also on the community calendar, the Gilbert Advocacy Center is asking for public help. The nonprofit works alongside Gilbert police to support people in the first hours after a crisis, and it is running a community-assistance push for its victim-advocate programs. The center is seeking volunteers, donations and greater awareness of its work.

Maricopa County plans to fog parts of Gilbert, Chandler and Mesa for mosquitoes between midnight and 5 AM on June 9, weather permitting.

Gilbert Public Schools' Governing Board will hold an executive session at 5 PM on June 9 at the district office on Gilbert Road. Executive sessions are closed to the public, so there is no open agenda to follow.

Libraries are busy with summer programming this week. Perry Library offers Toddler Storytime at 10:15 AM Tuesday, followed by Family Storytime at 11:15 AM, and LEGO Hour on Wednesday. Southeast Regional Library hosts a teen book club at 5:30 PM Wednesday. Most children's programs fill up, so arriving early is advised.

High school basketball fans can catch Section 7 tournament qualifier rounds at the Arizona Athletic Grounds fieldhouse this week, with the boys event starting Friday, June 12.
